The earliest proof of Novi Sad existence can be traced back to 1694. Since then the town has evolved to being the centre of Serbian Culture being also called the Serbian Athens. Today the town is one of the biggest industrial, financial and economical centers of Serbia. It is also a big continuous building site, the town evolving continuously.
Even though the first historical mentioning about the town is quite recent, the territory has been inhabited by Celts (4th century BC), Romans (1st century BC), Byzantines and other migratory peoples such as the Huns, the Ostrogoths, the Gepidae, etc.
On of the town’s symbols is the Petrovaradin Fort, which dates back to Roman times under the name of Cusum. In the middle ages it was occupied by the Byzantines, and in the second half of the XII-th century it is taken over by the Cistercite monks. They had to build a fort to defend from the tartaric attacks. Starting with 1526 the fort has been occupied by the Ottoman Empire up until 1687 when the Austro Hungarian Empire conquered it. In 1692 the building of the fort as it stands today started. The building took almost 100 years to complete (1780). It was one of the most impressive military constructions of the time in Europe.
