SZEGED


HISTORY


Situated on the place where the Tisza and Mures rivers meet, Szeged has a population of about 180000 people and is a regional center with a history which dates back 2000 years. Back in the migratory times all the peoples that went from Asia towards Europe passed these places. At the end of the IXth century the Hungarian people started building over the ruins of the Roman buildings.

The name of Szeged first appears in official documents in 1183. Becoming an important commercial and administrative center Szeged becomes a town in 1247.

It is conquered by the Turks in 1526 and set free by Christian Troops in 1686. Since then the town has started a peaceful development phase.

The town has fought a constant battle for survival with the Tisa river, being flooded several times. In 1879 the river destroyed the old town. The current town has been built over the old one and is one of the most modern towns as far as systematization goes. Szeged is a town of water, not only because of its rivers but also because of the thermal waters that spring here, very good for treating diseases.



CULTURE


Szeged is an important religious centers. Since the middle ages the population is vastly roman-catholic.

Later on Calvinists, orthodox, and other religions sprung up. The town is proud of its multinationality element. Here reside, Turks, Germans, Armenians, Greeks, Romanian and other nationalities.

The role of cultural center is further strengthened by the Science Academy and well known Universities, the Music Conservatory, 2 theatres, valuable museum as well as the numerous artistic events that take place every year.

The Del-alfodi region takes advantage of the numerous sunny days to show off its beauty. The National Parks, ground preservation sectors, Protected areas, the fauna, the flora, the zoos, amusement parks, rivers and lakes, natural exhibits, shows, museums, local farms and other places all keep a part of the natural elements that have been left to us.



ECONOMY


Today Szeged is one of the most prosperous towns in Hungary. The economy is based mainly on agriculture and commerce, a few traditional products being paprika peppers, tobacco, fish and hand sown shoes, a remembrance of Turkish occupation.

In 2004, together with Szeged city hall 2 projects were started and implemented: “The program for trans-border cooperation between Timisoara and Szeged”. The objectives were to run the projects: “Program for training specialists in border issued from Timisoara and Szeged city halls” and “Program for exchange in the area of architecture and urban planning between Szeged and Timisoara”. Running these projects facilitated the collaboration between specialists from the city halls as well as architects and urban planners form the two cities.

Szeged signed a “Twinning and collaboration Protocol” on the 27 January 1998 with Timisoara. Through this protocol a collaboration was established in the following fields: economy, science, education, sanitary, administrative, humanitarian, religious, sports, tourism, nature conservation, ethnic minorities, railroad and road building and new border crossing points.
