The DKMT euroregion – About the region
The DKMT (Dunăre-Criş-Mureş-Tisa) euroregion is a European region surrounded by the Danube and 3 other big rivers, a region with common history and traditions, a region open to a common future through a trans-border collaboration. It is comprised by:
The following counties in Romania: Arad, Caraş-Severin, Timiş, Hunedoara;
The following counties in Hungary Bács-Kiskun, Békés, Csongrád;
The autonomous province of Voivodina in Serbia.
Arad County prides itself with a well developed economy, with an educated, varied and cheap workforce. Being the main entry point into Romania for tourists coming from western Europe it attracts these tourists by the magnificent scenery in the hilly and mountainous areas around the Mures and White Cris rivers. The county’s industry is being developed due to foreign investments (automotive takes a leading part).
The under soil of Caras Severin county is rich in ore and minerals and has caused the development of heavy industry in the county (steel mills, machine building, etc). Resita is the oldest steel mill center in Romania (the mill dates back to de XVIII century and was built by the AustroHungarian Empire). The county also has a high tourism potential with the vast majority of the area being forested mountains. Baile Herculane is the oldest natural spa center in Romania, dating back to roman times. Although there are some very nice resorts (Baile Herculane, Semenic, Poiana Marului), as well as very beautiful agro tourism areas (Garana, Brebu, Crivaia), tourism is not valued at its true value by the authorities.
Timis County has developed into the second most attractive economic area of the country (after Bucharest) through tradition and perseverance. It is an important and reliable business partner, for regional growth. Industry is very well developed (through German, American and Italian investments), important companies having production facilities in the county: Continental, Solectron, Delphi, Zoppas, Draexelmayer, etc. The area is covered by the Banat plain, the county also having a big agricultural potential. Timisoara (the little Vienna) is an important culture, tourism and university center.
Hunedoara County also has a very rich under soil and has shaped its industries (mills, extraction). We can also find the machine building industry, chemical industry, power plants furniture and building materials industries in the county.
The Bács-Kiskun county is widely known for its strong agricultural background but lately has seen a strong commercial development.
The three main towns of the Békés county (Békéscsaba-Gyula-Békés) are known for their developed food industries but also for their light industry.
The Csongrád county is situated in the center of the Hungarian Southern Plain. A powerful food industry based on the county’s agriculture has developed. Here we can find the worldwide know Pick factory and many pepper processing factories (there is even a pepper museum).
The Autonomous province of Vojvodina is firstly an agricultural region, with large areas of wheat, corn, yeast and sunflower plantations. Agriculture has helped the strong food processing industry. Towns like NoviSad and Subotica are important economical, cultural and historic centers as well as strong university towns. The region is the best developed in Serbia especially in agricultural and food processing industry terms. The region also has a strong chemical and metal processing industry as well as building materials, textiles and other industries. Agriculture represents 30% of the GDP and industry 36%.
